The Battle of the Salad Swag 2017 Iron Chef Competition

Year 5 of the Nixa Iron Chef will be the ultimate test of your culinary skills & creativity.  This is not salad in the ordinary sense…we want your greatest, most creative, deliciously healthful, made from scratch “artistically composed salad” innovation.  Think beyond lettuce and take salad to the next level with veggies, fruits, grains, legumes, pasta, greens, herbs, spices, dressings/sauces & more...

This is a FREE Event for the public to attend!!!!!  Last year SHAC awarded cash & culinary prizes and the top teams from the grades 4-6 and Master Chef grade category were featured on OzarksLive! TV show making their recipes.

The goal of the event is to inspire students to become connected to their food, acquire valuable lifetime culinary skills, encourage cooking with friends/family and learn how to develop flavors in different and in a healthy way.

At this time our 2017 Iron Chef Live Competition is FULL. However, due to an overwhelming response each year we have created the 2017 Iron Chef At-Home Competition.

The At-Home Competition works similarly to the Live Competition. Your team will come up with your original recipe and create that recipe at home. Please remember that you are required to incorporate the secret ingredient into your recipe.

    This year’s secret ingredient is:

    • Peeled orange baby carrots (nubs)

    This year’s theme is:

    • Battle of the Salad Swag
    • This is not salad in the ordinary sense…we want your greatest, most creative, deliciously healthful, made from scratch “artistically composed salad” innovation.  Think beyond lettuce and take salad to the next level with veggies, fruits, grains, legumes, pasta, greens, herbs, spices, dressings/sauces & more...hot, cold or a combination of both.

    This year’s rules:

    • Secret Ingredient must be used as a main, featured flavor
    • Salad must have a from scratch made dressing, sauce, pesto or similar component
    • Salad must be an “entree featured size salad” preparation (vs. a side salad/accompaniment type salad)
    • Salad must be easily replicated at home, by families with easy to find & affordable ingredients
    • Salad recipe portion should be created to serve 1 person

When you have completed perfecting your recipe, you will submit a written version of your recipe along with a picture of the finished recipe to our SHAC Committee electronically. Please submit this completed recipe form along with your picture to TeresaBrown@nixaschools.net.

Your submission must be received NO LATER THAN Sunday, February 5, 2017. At that time our SHAC Committee will go thru each submission and award one at home winner in Grades 1-3 and one winner in grades 4-6. These two winning teams will be guaranteed a slot in next years (2018) Iron Chef live competition.

***Please note Due to the change in our competition from the 4th-6th Grade level (Team competition) to the 7th-8th Grade level (Solo Master Chef competition) we are updating you on what will transpire in the event that your team wins the At-Home competition.  Please see the information below.***

For teams competing in the at home challenge, the winning team receives an automatic bid into next year's competition. However, this excludes current 6th graders who will be in 7th-grade next year since the live competition changes at that grade. If your team consists of students from various grade levels 4-6 you will still be guaranteed a slot in next year's live competition AS A TEAM.  However, the current 6th-grade students that promote to 7th-grade will no longer be eligible to be a part of that team. You are welcome to select a replacement team member, if you wish, keeping in mind that your team will still need to consist of 3-5 people. If your team consists ONLY of current 6th-grade students then you are still eligible to win the At-Home competition, however, you will no longer be eligible to win a guaranteed slot in next year's live competition.)

The winners will be announced at this year’s live competition on Saturday, February 18 at Nixa JuniorHigh.

Good Luck to all of our At-Home Iron Chef teams. Have fun & Happy Cooking!
