4th Grade October Book Club

  • As a voluntary alternative option to the weekly reading logs, the fourth grade teachers are offering a Mark Twain Book Club to all students.  We will be reading four of the Mark Twain nominees (one each month) through December.  Each fourth grade teacher will read one of the four books and become that book’s sponsor for all four months.  Children may choose to read the books in any order, and they will communicate with that book’s sponsor on a weekly basis.  The first week, students will meet with the teacher during the first ten minutes of one recess to get the information about how each teacher plans to meet and discuss the books.  After that, all book discussions could take place during one recess each week or in a blog entry each week for that book or any combination of those two options.  Students who wish to participate in the Mark Twain Book Club option should be aware of a few things:

    • Participation objectives must be fully met to be eligible for the next month’s book club.  In other words, if you do not participate fully, you will owe a Reading Log each week for the next month.
    • Mark Twain nominees are written at different Lexile levels.  Some books will be easier to read than others for many fourth graders.  If a book is written above your current Reading Lexile level, you may still participate.  However, you will need to read the book with someone who will commit to reading it together.  Your responses on the blog, however, will need to be your own.
    • Mathews’ library has a few copies of each Mark Twain nominee, but not enough for 20+ students to check out at the same time.  Therefore, many of those planning to participate will need to locate the book elsewhere.  Options include, but are not limited to:
      • Public libraries
      • Scholastic
      • Amazon
      • Barnes and Noble

It might be possible to trade the book you chose in September with a friend who would like to use it for October’s book club.  Then you would have a new book for October’s book club, too.  Don’t forget ebooks as an option!

If you would like to participate in the Mark Twain Book Club, please discuss this with your

parents/family.  The books are listed below.  Please check the book you plan to read in September and return the bottom of this   The first recess meeting for each book will be during the first full week of September (September 5-9), and you will need to have your book by that time.
