Student Teacher/Internship Process
(Elementary, Secondary, SPED, Counseling, OT/PT/SLP)
Step 1:
*If you hold a current Missouri Teaching or Substitute Teaching Certificate, skip to step 2.
ALL STUDENT TEACHERS and COUNSELING INTERNS MUST HAVE A SUBSTITUTE CERTIFICATE PRIOR TO YOUR FIRST DAY.
You must first apply online with DESE (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education) for a substitute certificate (requires original transcripts to be mailed to DESE Educator Certification - applicant is responsible for the $50 certificate fee)

Step 2:
MACHS Background Check
You must have a MACHS background check done prior to beginning your student teaching with Nixa Public Schools as the requesting agency.
You must save proof of clearance page, found at the bottom of your DESE profile page, to submit to the Education Office.
To schedule an FBI fingerprint background clearance:
Please use code: 0428 if identifying Nixa Public Schools
as the requesting agency.
CLICK HERE for the background check procedures. No other clearances are acceptable per DESE. The applicant is responsible for the fingerprint fee.
Step 3:
Send email to Kristen Joy with subject line "Student Teacher Documentation" and include the following information:
-Copy of current Missouri Substitute Certificate
-Copy of Background Clearance page with your university or Nixa Public Schools listed as the requesting agency
Step 4:
Make an appointment to get your NPS ID picture taken and technology access set up (network/email) by using this link. You will need to visit the Faught Adminstration Center in the Community Room (301 S. Main St. Nixa, MO 65714) on the date/time of your appointment.
*If you are a yearlong intern, please complete the NPS substitute application as well.*

Required Co-Teaching Training Dates for
Elementary & Secondary Student Teachers & Interns
(excluding OT/PT/SLP):
Training Offered through Canvas Module to be completed with your cooperating teacher
Fall: Completed by August 31st
Spring: Completed with your Cooperating Teacher by December 10th.
Canvas course will be available beginning December 1st.
