Emergency - Standard Response Protocol

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND GUARDIANS

Our school has adopted The “I Love U Guys” Foundation’s Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Students and staff will be training, practicing, and drilling the protocol.

COMMON LANGUAGE

The Standard Response Protocol (SRP) is based on an all-hazards approach as opposed to individual scenarios.
Like the Incident Command System (ICS), SRP utilizes clear common language while allowing for flexibility in protocol.

The premise is simple - there are five specific actions that can be performed during an incident. When communicating these, the action is labeled with a “Term of Art” and is then followed by a “Directive.” Execution of the action is performed by active participants, including students, staff, teachers and first responders. The SRP is based on the following actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter.

If possible, bring their phone

Adults and staff are trained to:

Bring roll sheet and Go Bag (unless instructed not to bring anything with them, dependent on reason for evacuation.)
Lead students to Evacuation location
Account for students and adults
Report injuries or problems using Red Card/Green Card method.

SHELTER

Earthquake

Safety Strategies might include:

Evacuate to shelter area

Security Event Happens at a School

We will notify parents through text alerts in a crisis, which is why we stress the importance of making sure the test text on the 10th of each month works on your phone. We cannot promise it will work 100% of the time, but that will be our direct line of communication with you. If there are issues, please email quicknews@nixaschools.net.

If a security event happens at a school, we will use one of the following procedures:
- Secure: this means that the outside of the building is secure but things inside are happening normally or as close to normal as possible. But, people are not allowed in or out of the building.
- Lockdown: this means that there is an immediate threat to the building. Those in the building will be instructed to lock doors, get out of sight, and be prepared to react.

If something happens at a building, we will update parents/guardians on where they need to go and what they need to do as soon as we can. We may have to clear a building room by room, and we may need to move students to a secure location in order to reunite them with you. Please follow these instructions so we can all work together.

How Do I Need to React in a Reunification Event?

When something happens that causes us to need to remove students from a building and get them back to you, we will use our reunification procedures.

Things that you need to realize in these events are the following:

Wait until we say where & WHEN to meet your child. We have to make sure where we are taking them is safe and then move or transport the students there. We know that your desire is to get to your child, but we have to make sure they are safe. Parents running toward a reunification site causes more panic. The only thing law enforcement see are adults running toward a scene. They don't know who you are and will treat you like a stranger. Once the place we are using to get you back together with your child is safe, we will let you know where to go and what to do. In these situations, please pack your patience.
Bring your photo ID. The people getting you back together with your child might not be from the school your child attends. We have to make sure that every child gets back to the correct adult. There are many things, like custody arrangements, that we have to verify. This takes time. Thanks to understanding that we are doing everything out of the safety needs of the students.
Don't rush the school. In the event of a crisis, the last thing that is needed is unknown adults coming to the school. While you might be known to the normal school staff, the law enforcement officers don't know you. When a crisis event happens, everyone becomes a stranger until we verify who they are. Your goal is to get to your child. Our goal is to get your child back to you. If we have to deal with adults rushing the school, we are delayed in getting the students to a safe location. We will tell you where to go to meet your child. Please wait until we tell you where to go. This is hard, we know. But it will help us keep the process as quick as we can make it.
We will tell you want we can when we can. As we are accessing situations, we could move students to a temporary location and then move them to a final location. Or we might keep them where they are. These are all of the decisions being made by law enforcement and school officials. Once we know we will tell you. Things can change so we want to be sure. We may send all parents to a holding location and then announce the reunification spot. Again, please pack your patience because we are making sure where we are and/or where we are going is safe to carry out our reunification plans.
